power pop!

Ok this aint punk or crust nor hardcore. But i like it alot! THE SHIVVERS, they broke up in 82!

Simply put, the Shivvers may be the best female-fronted powerpop band the world will ever see. It's just that the world wasn't looking their way back in 1980. They had chops, talent, originality, looks... And if they'd been based in New York or L.A. the Shivvers would either have changed the course of music in the 1980s ...or they'd have gloriously crashed and burned in a world-class blaze of hype.

Thanks to Nani for this one.

MASSMORD INTERVIEW

Massmord plays awesome dark melodic downtuned crustcore with dual fe/male vocal trade off and they're from Lund,Sweden.I did this interview via email on June 2006. They're new album 'unleashed' will be out this april and will be released by blindead production(sweden) and few other more labels from europe. They are touring europe this mid year in support of their new record.Check it out, they're one of my favourite band from sweden!

1)helo massmord please introduce yourself and tell us what you do in the band.
Tijana and Sonny vocals, Ida and Andreas guitar, Berra bass and Olof drums
2)How was the Band started? what really influence you guys musically and lyrically?
And do members of massmord plays in any other bands or
run a zine,record label etc.?
Tijana: I don’t write the music but lyrically I get inspired by stuff that happens around me. Like things in my surrounding, injustices in the world and so on. I and Ida also play in the all girl band Beyond Pink. I sing and Ida plays the guitar.
Sonny: Musically, everything I listen to inspires me more or less. When it comes to the lyrics I write about everything that comes to my mind, all the things that makes me angry and frustrated. We formed in 2004 and in the begining it was just me, Olof and Ida. But soon Berra joined the band. After a while we asked Tijana if she wanted to join on vocals, and she did so now we were 5 in the band. When we realized that we had to get one more guitarist we looked around for one but couldn’t find anyone. Finally we found Andreas and he learned all the songs real quick so that was that.
Besides from Massmord I run a webzine called Rise and Subvert and I also recently joined the band Aktiv Dödshälp and me and Krogh (Attack!Fanzine) are currently working on a fanzine.
3)tell us the story behind your first LP 'inget liv/ingen dod', are you satisfied with the
release? hows the respond so far? i actually loves all the songs from that LP.
Tijana: I’m pretty satisfied with the result. Off course there are some things that we could have done better, like the sound is pretty crappy and the soundlevels between Idas and Andreas guitars is quite uneven, but yeah I’m satisfied in general. It seems like people really appreciate it too, so that feels awesome.
Sonny: I’m glad you like it. I really love the songs on that record and I share Tijanas opinion when it comes to the sound part. But I still think that we got the best out of that studio so there isn’t really anything to complain about. We learned alot during that recording so I hope we will get a better sound next time. I have only heard good things about the record and the record sells very well too. I wanna thank everyone who buys the record.

4)the song 'its true.its true' have an interesting lyric on the cliches of punk,so what does punk really means to you? and what do you think about the local punks, do they all care about the world or most of it are just charged haired drunk studded punks caring about nothing?
Tijana: Berra is the one who wrote that song, but I can relate and understand what he means. It seems like people have stopped caring about the world and about politics and that’s really sad to see. Another thing that people seem to believe is that punk is all about your hair and the clothes that you wear and so on. For me punk is more like an attitude you have towards yourself and the society you live in. For me it means that you never stop question everything that goes on around you.
Sonny: I agree, there is alot of ignorance and arrogance in the punkscene in general. People seem to care more about the ”big issues” and forget about all the small things that makes us grow as a counterculture and collective. Somehow it seems like it’s easier to take on those ”big issues” rather than dealing with the more relevant problems within the scene. If we can’t manage to work together and help eachother out, how the hell are we going to make a difference in the long run?

5)Coming from a country where great bands like wolfbrigade, skitsystem, mob 47,to what end?,avskum etc..
Does it bother you when people will just say ' Massmord ' is just another band from sweden playin punk.
So what really makes you stand out from the other bands.
Tijana: Actually I don’t think there is anything that makes us stand out from the crowd, so the people who say: ”Massmord are just another band from Sweden playing punk” are right haha.
Sonny: No it doesn’t bother me cause that’s what we are, right? I think that every band stands out in one way or another. It’s just hard to put your finger on what that might be. But I’m sure there is something. We didn’t start the band to creat something new or to stand out from other bands. We play the kind of music we like and that’s it.
If you don’t like it then that’s fine, we don’t force people to come and see us live or to buy our records.
6)so how is the current political situation in sweden?how is the education system like in
sweden?do any of massmord members involve in any kind of activism?
Tijana: Politicians are like politicians are everywhere around the world; lying, manipulative bastards. And so is the case in Sweden too.
Sonny: It’s election-time here this september so everything is very chaotic right now. Everything is about the elections and whether the Social democrats or the Neo-liberal right-parties will win the elections. To me it’s all the same. The difference between the parties in Sweden is not big at all. Other than that we have a very strong nationalistic movement over here. That’s a real threat most of the time.
7)Whats your favourite bands from singapore or southeast asia? any plans to tour here?
Tijana: I don’t know. We don’t have any plans on touring SE Asia but I think that if somebody would set up a tour for us we would definitalley come!
So if you know someone who is willing to do that let us know and we’ll be there!
Sonny: A tour in SE Asia would be fucking awesome. Anytime...
SE Asia have alot of great bands. My favourites at the moment are; Fallen World, Apparatus, Mass Separation, Domestik Doktrin and Secret Seven.
8)Any last words and upcoming plans for massmord..not forgetting how can the kids here contact massmord? Thank you!!
Tijana: The kids in Asia can go to our website: http://www.massmord.net/ and get in touch with us there. They can also download all the songs from our LP for free!
Sonny: Stay pissed and angry, stay punk and have fun. Thanx alot for the interview.

MASS SEPARATION interview!

Ok this is also another old interview taken in june 2005 that is worth checkin out,its an interview with one of my favourite band from Malaysia, Mass Separation! By the time you read this they have already played Singapore twice and also did an indonesian tour. Their upcoming split 7" with SMG will be out in April this year. Kid and Fahmi also got a new band call Kahroeshi playin dark hc that will be touring indonesia in August this year and also will be doing a split 7" with Pazahora. check them out.
All question answered by Kid.

1.I know mass separation have been around for some time now and you guys went through alot of line up changes, please tell us a brief history of the band?

Started out sometime around 1996 by few high school friends. With the support of our local and overseas DIY Hardcore Punk / Grindcore scenesters, we’ve been playing shows and putting out releases since then.
But we also had been changing line-ups in almost every each release. And now only Boy, our guitarist is left from the Ignorance in Breed Demo line-up. Musically we’ve been evolving around crust, grind, thrash and hardcore. While our lyrics represents our personal angst and socio political views.
You still could find some of our old line-ups in the scene, Yeap now is with Abc Weapons (crust) and Pisschrist (d-beat) in Australia, Aja still playing for Innerfall, Fastgame and Relationsheep (punk rock), Bai still drumming for the grindcore old-timers, Negation and his another grindcore project. Bart will be joining our next recording, again with his ethnic musical instruments.
Our current line ups: Niesa & Kid (vokills), Boy (guitar), Fahmi (bass) and Kia (drums)

2.What really inspire Mass separation's lyrics and music?
I usually wrote about how I feels about things around the scene and my life. Anything that I feel close to that time. Somehow I like to write something that people could relates to and avoid being too personal or absurd. But that’s depends on who’s reading our lyrics, some people would think we’re too political, some would find it hilarious or even stupid. Hopefully some punk kids would become more inspired!
Our music always been around crust, hardcore, thrash and grind. I don’t really know what have been inspiring our music, but we do got influenced by bands or music that we like. But it’s really nothing you could compare. People tend to compare us with big names in the power violence or grindcore scene that we never heard. That’s really freaks us out! We’ll give our best but it might not be enough for you!

3.What do you guys do when you're not playin in the band? any members of mass separation into any activism?
Most of us are working. Boy and Niesa prefer to be free and free lance or part-time works. Besides that we’re all involved with organizing shows (Riang Ria DIY, Extreme Assault Fest, our own label/distro (Propamedia, Symphonic Blast, Little Red Room) and zines (Info Aktif, Oddshelf, Ricecooker). Yes few us do, well it really depends on issues. Let’s see what I can recall. Ok, some of us we’ve been with working on socio-political issues like poverty in KL, environmental issues, anti racist campaigns, freedom for east timor, repression in acheh, local police brutality, free foods to the KL city homeless and needy, awareness campaigns and events on capitalism/globalisation, group discussions on anarchism and other ideologies, workers and women rights, anti war campaign and protest, may day protest, collecting donations for acheh tsunami victims and maybe some more than I can’t remember now. Personally I feel that it’s really important to get involved or at least try contribute anything that you can regarding issues that you feel close to.

4.How does it feel to be the most hardworking band in malaysia? I understand that most members of mass separation also plays in other bands?what are those bands and what type of music do they play?also tell us about propamedia and symphonic blast?
I don’t think we’re the most hardworking band in Malaysia. I believe there’s lotsa other local bands that way much better and more active than we do? Yeah, most of also play in other bands right now, Kia also playing drums for Nazzaq (death/grind) and Banzai 606 (thrashcore), Boy plays for Fastgame (thrashcore), Quest of Quasar (screamo crust) and Innerfall (hardcore) and I also sings for Fastgame and Quest of Quasar. Fahmi had to quit Reconstruct (grindcore) and Warfare (hardcore punk) after working in KL. Propamedia mainly runs by me and Niesa. We’re just another small DIY Hardcore Punk label and distro. Apart from just DIY music, we’ll be distributing literatures and merchandises. For more info and latest release/distro list, contact us at propamedia@gmail.com. Kia and Tiong (Reconstruct, Tools of The Trade) runs Symphonic Blast now. Their label/distro focused more on releasing, distributing local/international extreme music and also organizing the annual Extreme Assault Festival. Extreme music fans /bands, check out their website at www.symphonicblast.com.

5.Kids in malaysia have to serve national service too?tell us more about that, i know its really different from Singapore, when was it started?
Yes, started few years back, Malaysia also has a sort of National Service called Program Khidmat Negara. Selected 18 years old boys and girls now have to go through few months of ‘brainwashing’ camps before continuing their studies or life. Mainly is about pushing down blind loyalty, patriotism and nationalism into these youth throats. Pardon me because I never been to one, but for me it’s is something like boy/girl scouts but it’s just plain stupid. Very unlike Singapore, it got nothing much to do with defending or helping you, family and friends in case of emergencies vice versa.

6.Please give us a brief discography of mass separation's releases and also your upcoming releases?
OK let here goes our discography:
Discography (1996-2005):

7.When are you guys gonna tour the world? ehe, since you guys has done tons of split releases with great bands abroad. So playing singapore soon?
Hope that we could do that soon! Having lotsa releases doesn’t mean that you could book a tour anytime you want. Demisor and My Precious played in Japan before. Utarid gonna tour Europe sometime in July. Second Combat and Eleven just got back from Indonesia. While us still struggling to book a show in Singapore! We’re looking forward to work out any overseas tour, anyone could us help out?

8.So what are your views on the current southeast asian hcpunk scene nowadays? name some of your favourite bands from your area and also from around the region?
DIY South East Asian Hc Punk scenes took shape a little bit late but its positively growing right now. We can see lotsa bands, shows, zines, labels/distros popping up everywhere. And on the political side of our scenes, things like collectives, food not bombs, action groups like wise also seem to be more matured and realistic. What we should do now is to get more organized and linked to each other scenes. Not only within SE Asia but also with other regions! It’s cool to know every happenings and to collect every records from US, Sweden and Japan scenes, there’s totally nothing wrong about that! But what do you know about your own neighborhood? Are you doing something to support your local scene?
It’s really impossible to list everyone down here, so I wrote some hardcore punk and metal bands that came through my mind now!
Malaysia: Banzai 606, Nuisance Drilled, Sarjan Hassan, Damokis, Hasrat, Middle Enemy, Nazzaq, Negation, Parkinson, Perpetual, Radiata, Nyiblorong, Suara Anak Muda, Anti Protokol, Holokrust, Skullkrusher, Apparatus, Relationsheep, Self Made God, Sickness, Sharon Stoned, Tools Of The Trade.
Thailand: Phlan, License To Kill, Heretic Angels, Failure Trace, Lacerate.
Singapore: Secret 7, Jahilia, Recover, Under Attack, Social Integration, Hudud, Fallen World, Rememories, Elegy For Eulisza, Subtle Revenge, Flesh Disgorged, Wartornation, Bile Puscess, Hen, Kliwon, Demisor, Eyesore, Protest, Insurecction, Volition, Demilitarize.
Indonesia: Domestik Doktrin, Raja Singa, Cryptical Death, Relationshit, Mortal Combat, Dirty Mouth, Atret, Extreme Decay, Forgotten, Siksakubur.
Philippines: ADA, Feud, Beauty of Doubt, Standfast, Crustration, Dissent Noise, Eskapo.

9.Ok im closing this interview. So what can we expect from Mass separation in the future? any last words?

SCHIFOSI INTERVIEW

ok this seems kinda old.Its an interview i did with kate from SCHIFOSI back in JUNE 2005. SCHIFOSI is a downtuned crust band from melbourne that also features members from Abc Weapon,Pisschrist and Terror firma.
By the time you'vr read this, they've alreeady toured the US for six week in 2005 with kakistocracy and also played the Pointless fest.
Their new record 'absentium existence' is already out on thrashsteady syndicate for CD and their Lp version on Alerta Antifacista.

1.hello! greetings from Singapore/southeast asia! please introduce the band
to the readers out there, tell us a brief history of the band.what does schifosi
means anyway?how would you describe schifosi's music.
schifosi came together a few years ago after other bands we were
in defunct in one way or another. we hadbeen in bands together before- tim, bart and myself in
recalcitrate and tim and tristan in deconsume. thereis tristan and jacquie on guitar, bart bass, tim on drums, myself on vocals. it initially started with just tim, tristan, bart and
myself and it was about a year and a half into it thatwe asked jacquie to play second guitar.
Schifosi is italian for filthy and disgusting, it it adescriptive word and an insult. i guess our music in downtuned melodic crust punk.
2.Also tell us what other bands are schifosi members involved in?
at the moment, j is in another band called terra firma
and tim is playing in pisschrist and abc weapons.
3.you guys got some cool releases in the past few years of existence,
how was the response so far?
the repsonse has been great, particulary since the 12"
came out and now that the 7" has been out for a
while. Our good friends in Endless Blockades, Broken
Rain and Appliances and Cars have gone totally nuts
on distribution, they have really helped us.
we have made some great friends from getting our
music out there, particularly overseas. australia
feels somewhat isolated sometimes!
4.What do you guys think about the sudden 'd-beat phenomenom'.D-beat already
exist for a long time now but why the sudden hype for it in the past few years?
Any other cool bands from your area that is worth checkin out?
yea the d-beat phenomenon has definately exploded and
gotten a whole lot popular of late. but thats cool,
trends come and go and i'll still be getting into this
shit for years. i think a lot of the hype has come
particulary from western countries as i think that
they do have a lot more 'influence' or just more
coverage in the world wider punk scene/community.
5.What really inspire/influence schifosi's lyrics and music?who usually
writes the lyrics?
the lyrics are personnal socio-political commentary on
the world around me and how it affects my life etc.
they do tend to be somewhat melancholic, but i do
maintain that there is a lot of hope in the words that
i write. you gotta have hope.
bart also writes some songs too, a few of songs that
will be on our next realease have been worked on by
both of us.
6.i heard thrashsteadysyndicate(singapore) is going to
release your next full length? what should people expect from Schifosi in the future? and also you guys
touring the US soon?
yes they are putting it out on cd.which is awesome!
it is getting released on vinyl by Alerta Antifascista
from germany. this hopefully will be out in the next
couple of months.
we are touring the U.S late july to late august,
which'll be awesome.check out our website for
dates/shows...
7.how is the melbourne hcpunk scene these days?
the melbourne scene is pretty good at the moment,
regular shows etc several bands that are worth checking out.
pisschrist, straightjacket, terrafirma, the focus...
eddie currant suppression ring. there are great
interstate bands too: los diablos, smash and grab,
falluja city rockers, draft dodger, sydney city trash...
we just had the closure of the pink palace which was a
long runnning warehouse that put on d.i.y all age
shows and rehearsal space which sux, but in time
something else will happen...we do have a few good
pubs/bars that put on lots of our shows too.
8.Any members of schifosi into any activism? e.g
food not bombs, and hows the political situation over there in
australia?
yep we are all pretty active people, food not bombs
does 3 kitchens a week and has been going steady for
many years now. melbourne also has a pretty strong
squatting scene too...as far as australia goes i think
in relation to the rest of the world we are somewhat
apathetic but many issues like deforestation,
indigenious rights, uranium mining and asylum
seeker/refugee action have still really strong
support/following and always will.
9.Whats your favourite band from singapore/southeastasia? pisschrist did a tour here earlier this year, any plans to tour se asia?
well i like apparatus, minus and fallen world....
pisschrists' tour went great and we'd love to come
over your way, perhaps soon. it would be so much fun.
10.last words?... thanks for your time!
thanx for the interview, we really appreciate it.

welcome bastards!!

Heyho,
let me tell you why i got this blog running, back in 2005 or even before that i decide to do a paper zine (Pathetic ape) that covers alot of hcpunk music locally and internationally. During preparation i interviewed bands like Schifosi,Mass Separation..and i got a couple of scene reports. I also did tons of reviews from records, zine and shit. Then when i got into NS i tend to be really lazy, and i play in alot of bands to concentrate on, then eventually alot of the reviews we're lost because my dad delete it coz he thinks its just something not important.
After that i didnt have the motivation to continue.. oh wells, fuck the reviews! im gonna post those interviews evethough its kinda outdated.. and of coz..the zine will continue from here!! feel free to comment any shit.. .

hafiz is the bastard
